Cocktail Hour: Simple Bloody Mary’s

It might be a little early in the week to be posting about breakfast cocktails, but its a short one for most of us, so I’m doing it anyways. Plus, just in time to stock up for that big Easter Brunch!  I have to share this recipe for one of the best homemade Bloody Mary’s I have ever enjoyed, and it was so simple – the best kind of drink for a Sunday brunch! All it took was a few simple ingredients : ZingZang Bloody Mary Mix, Absolut Peppar, fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice along with your favorite garnishes.  I’ll just leave the proportions up to you and your morning.

Life is in the Details

While we do spend the majority of our weekends doing very unglamorous things like scraping paint and sanding trim,  or shoveling snow – I try very hard to make it a point to stop and spend at least a few moments each day pausing to enjoy what we love. Whether it be finding somewhere new to grab breakfast, exploring nooks in the new house, or stopping to enjoy a refreshing cocktail – the point is with out taking moments  to find a bit of balance I’m sure we would have gone crazy by now! Life lately has taught me patience is invaluable, and it is always appropriate to have a bottle of prosecco in your fridge. Cheers to the Weekend!

DIY Kitchen Makeover

Renovation on a budget is all about prioritizing.   Since we put so much of our financial resources in to our new roof, new bathroom, and other general must-be-done repairs, our kitchen is the biggest temporary  DIY make over. Truth be told, I had NO hopes of resurrecting our kitchen.  It was awful and I wanted to tear every single thing out as soon as we could. But as everyone knows kitchens are crazy expensive. So we got out the paint, sanded and repainted every.single.surface and upgraded the little details.

I replaced all the knobs with decorative glass pulls from anthropologie and my husband installed a brand new light fixture from Ballard Designs along with a shiny new Moen faucet.  We embraced the quirks (like the missing doors) and I’m displaying all my white dishware. Hey, open shelving is country classic right?  There are still a few to-do’s like removing the oversized wood stove, and doing something about those bright red counters – but for now, It’s been a pretty welcome change.  Best of all – the elements we did upgrade, are all pieces we will be happy to see stay when we do get around to a full kitchen remodel.

A Hint of Spring

Life has been a little crazy here at LFC lately. While we’re making huge strides at the house in Scituate – we’re scrambling to get our current home ready for our open house. I’ll admit I may have watched countless hours of HGTV but nothing could have prepared me for how involved getting your home ready for an open house would be.  My biggest tips? declutter like crazy, hire professional cleaners, and invest in the little details. And, of course, I believe fresh flowers make the home feel that much sweeter and brought in a hint of spring in for our showings this week.  I can almost smell that spring air.

And so the Journey Begins

Now that we’ve been working on the house for a few weeks, I wanted to take a minute to share a little bit about how we came to own this special home!  It’s a bit of an interesting story ; the home had  been for sale for a very long time and we were smitten the day it landed on the Market. Unfortunately it was in a complete state of disrepair and the list price was too high for us to swallow given all the work it would take.  Well to our surprise many months later, we happened to see that it was listed again at a dramatically lower price and we rushed to schedule another showing. We learned that the home had fallen in to a short sale and we decided to make an offer back in August.   We didn’t think much would come out of it but with a little perseverance and patience the house was ours by December.  At times I feel like we’re crazy to have taken on such a huge endeavor but then there are times where I feel utterly ecstatic that this historic lovely home so close to the sea is ours.

The house is listed as having been built in 1816 but we later learned the original half cape was built in the late 1780′s with an addition being put on somewhere in the next century, and I just adore all the old charm that comes with that age. One of the first things on our list to tackle was a brand new roof. The cedar roof that was there when we bought the house was well past its prime in desperate need of replacement and it was sure to be our biggest upfront expense.  We soon learned that not only did the shingles need to be replaced but so did all of the plywood underneath! I suppose this is what were in for!  As you can see from these images there was severe rot. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when our neighbors saw this major improvement! (Since it needs so much work were not living there just yet.)

Is it just me or is the sky in sea side towns just that much bluer than everywhere else? I’m thrilled with how our new roof is shaping up, and I’m loving the architectural asphalt shingles we went with instead of replacing with pricey cedar.   Stay tuned – I will be sharing our progress as we go!

A Little Exciting News

A while back I mentioned we were considering leaving the urban life for a move to Massachusetts’ coastal south shore. Well, I’m excited to share that we have officially bought our dream home by the sea in a small town called Scituate!  We found a charming 1816 antique cape with loads of potential  but is in desperate need of some serious TLC and renovations. It’s going to be a long and fun journey that I hope to share bits and pieces of along the way!

A Poppy Red Wedding

I’m finally getting around to blogging about the florals I created for a wedding last month at the New Seabury Country Club on Cape Cod.  My couple was as sweet as could be and I was lucky to also have been a guest because it was an incredible event! The florals were designed using colors ranging from cream to peach to vivid poppy to complement the bridesmaids striking red dresses.  Don’t you just love the color combination?  The gorgeous bride’s something borrowed was her grandmother’s rosary and you can see a hint of  it wrapped around the stems of her bouquet.  All images were captured by the talented Caitlin of  Photography by Caitlin.
